In the UK and London there are multiple organizations that you can volunteer with if there are any disasters. Most of the organizations you would volunteer with are charities such as:

-Red Cross

-Disaster Aid Response Team (DART) UK and Ireland

- SERVE on (Firefighters, police, ex-military, EMT's and mechanics)

-EMERGENCY

I could not find any way for someone to volunteer through government agencies. When looking at the UK government website they say that you can volunteer at charities or donate to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) https://www.dec.org.uk/ DEC is a local and international disaster charity that launched in 1963.

I think it is wonderful that people would volunteer in times of crisis, especially if they have family in the area that would need help. I know for firefighters in California (my friend is one in SF) that they agree to go to work if needed when there is a disaster. This means that even if you across the world on a vacation and they need you, you will need to fly back immediately to help out. I really admire people who work in jobs like these because they are the backbone for when things go wrong.

  1. Hi Caitlin,

It is good to know that in the UK there are a number of outlets for people looking to volunteer to get involved. Luckily in the UK, they don't really have to deal with natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, or earthquakes.

  2. Caitlin,

I find that interesting that the government does not offer opportunities for volunteers to help out. But it's good they have some organizations there that do. Because I agree that people who are willing to volunteer in that capacity without notice are critical, since there are only so many professionals.

  3. Hi Caitlin,

Its interesting that UK government doesn't have volunteer agencies. I wonder if its because those other organization have a robust volunteer system. I am assuming organizations like RED CROSS are very well established that they have proper system to track and utilized volunteers. Here, in our State, they are data base like where your friends signed up to have a list of volunteers during disaster. Many of these organization also ask for volunteers with technical or practical skills.
