Green Chemistry
Green Chemistry is the process of reducing pollution at its source rather than trying to clean up the mess after it has been created. I have not heard about green chemistry before this class but some of the 12 principles of green chemistry sound familiar to me. I also agree with all of the principles of green chemistry. Major steps need to take place immediately so we can try to minimize some of the disastrous damage that has already taken place. One of the most important principles I think are to minimize the potential for accidents, increase energy efficiency and design safer products and chemicals. I think it's crazy we have to push these principles toward companies, they should already be wanting to do these things, for their consumers and for the environment.

Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteThe concept of green chemistry is wonderful, but to me it seems more like common sense. The fact that this concept seems different that the others shouldn't be the case. I had mentioned to other members of our group this, but it is way less expensive and time consuming to focus on prevention rather than focusing on reacting to mistakes.
Hi Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteThe idea that these are not already established and required practices is definitely backwards. The corporations producing chemicals ought to be held to these standards, if they will not hold it of themselves.
Hi Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteThis makes me think of the saying 'its never too late' Sometimes its easier to prevent further damage than clean up the mess around us so not to create even more damage. I think of recycling and reusing as a branch of green chemistry.
I completely agree with you that its amazing how these principles of healthier environment and green chemistry is not practiced naturally by the big corporations and our government
