Agency's Role

United States Department of Energy:

The Department of Energy is a federal branch of the government whose goal main responsibility is energy. The majority of the energy the focus on is nuclear energy. They are in charge of all policies regarding nuclear material, handling of nuclear material, our nuclear weapons program and radioactive waste disposal.

Obviously, this type of department will have a huge impact on the environment. They can dictate how we consume energy and what we do with left over nuclear material. If nuclear material is not disposed of in a thoughtful manner, the radioactive material could seep into places like our ground water and cause death or radiation sickness. Also, if we are not mindful to the testing or use of nuclear material we could have something like Chernobyl happen. I believe radioactive material can be some of the most detrimental material. We need to take every precaution in handling it so we can adhere to environmental health and safety.

  1. Caitlin,

Climate change is a huge topic of discussion today. I am curious to know if the USDOE has information regarding that, or has information about clean, renewable energy. Are they promoting clean renewable resource projects?

  2. Hi Caitlin,
I also had the same question as Jordan, because it seems like renewable energy is the future. Nuclear energy is one of the most hazardous sources of energy. I wonder how much time and resources are being put into other alternatives.

  3. This is so interesting. When I think about Department of Energy, I think about all energy but no nuclear energy. I think this might be partially because when one think about the word "nuclear" it is associated with a negative presumption.

You are completely right in saying it is vital that the DOE is managed efficiently because of its role as a regulator for nuclear energy.
