Radon
There should be an awareness campaign about lung cancer associated with radon because around 21,000 excess deaths occur annually. To bring awareness to this issue there should be a national day dedicated to radon education and testing. Then, if people's homes were found to be unsafe from the testing the government should provide a subsidy to help people bring their homes down to safe levels. This subsidy could dramatically help people of lower socioeconomic status because for some people, even if they are aware that their housing is unsafe they do not have the means to fix the problem. Finally, the government could provide free kits to communities that can be handed out on national radon awareness day.
Hello Caitlin!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a national day for radon. It is clear that when days are dedicated to specific things, more people become aware of the problem/issue. Governmental assistance for radon testing is a great idea too. Where would that funding come from? Free kits would be great too, but the government would have to allocate money for that.
National Radon Day - that is a great idea, Caitlin. I think it will be equally important to make sure we make the national day well known. I feel like lately there are all these national days and nobody really pays attention to it. Maybe with funding from federal government, along with the free kit, using some fund for ads might go a long way
ReplyDeleteI think that's a great idea. Sometimes I wonder how effective national days are since there is one for just about anything but I think applying it to something like this would be so beneficial. I think the public health departments could push it more, since once people are aware, then they can have their homes tested. And having the government provide subsidies for residents who cannot afford to fix the problems it also a great solution.
