Urea formaldehyde -
This chemical is usually associated with respiratory problems such as: difficulty breathing, burning sensation in throat, wheezing and coughing, and nose irritations. However, there are other health effects such as fatigue, skin rash, sever allergic reactions and watery eyes. In homes whether the concentration of urea formaldehyde is very high there is an increased risk of cancer.
Bleach -
The most common health effects from bleach are irritation of the skin, eyes and throat. If bleach is in direct contact with skin it can cause skin irritation, burning and damage. If inhaled bleach can cause damage to lungs and organs, and respiratory problems such as coughing, wheezing and lightheadedness. Bleach should also not be consumed as it is consider to be extremely toxic.
Both of these chemicals are common in houses and should be handled with caution. Bleach is a very common cleaning product that many people deem as safe. However, you should still handle this product with caution and use protective gloves and open window to allow for ventilation.

Hey Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it amaze you how much we continue to learn how toxic things can be that we come across almost on a daily basis. How can these things be legal? Right! It's crazy to think that with all of the intelligence on the planet, we cannot invent things that wouldn't have adverse effects on humans.
I had a friend who's white clothing always smelled heavily of bleach. When I inquired him about it, he said his mother in law used to work at a hotel and used heavy bleached in the laundry - this is now "how she does laundry" even when asked not to use heavy bleach.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we educate people more, if we can break the existing norms?
Hi Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteAfter learning about all the chemicals around us, I wonder how much of our health issues are caused solely from this. I don't even know which products urea formaldehyde is in, since they don't even label it, but at least with bleach I can avoid more.
