Household Products

Windex Window Cleaner

This product scored very low on the health effects, it got 0's across the board:

This was very surprising to me because I thought that all cleaning products would pose some sort of health effects. However, it does say that this product is not subject to reporting so this could be a reason.

Lysol All-Purpose Complete Clean with Bleach

This product did have a health rating of 3, which is considered serious:

I believe this product poses a serious health risk because it contains bleach. When looking through the ratings of this product there were a lot of health warning about ingesting and general contact with the product. However, I always wear gloves when using this product and I make sure there is good ventilation in the area I am cleaning so I am not constantly breathing in the fumes.

I wouldn't say that looking up these products will make me change my habits of using this but I would like to opt for a more natural cleaner since it is better for the environment and my health. I have started using method more for general cleaning but these website didn't have any information provided from the manufacturer.

The only thing that surprised me is that windex received such a low rating. Of course, I would be careful when using this product but I never thought a chemical based cleaning product would not be considered dangerous

I believe that every consumer should be aware of cleaning products health effects. It should be mandatory that every products list the level of danger it poses from using it. Consumers should be more informed and companies should aim to not hide this information from us.

  1. Hi Caitlin,

That is surprising that Windex scored zeros for their hazard levels. One of the products I looked at were Lysol disinfecting wipes, and it was also a low hazard rating, which I thought definitely would have been more dangerous. But your assessment of the Lysol cleaner with bleach is interesting to know. I just used bleach today and spilled some on my pants, which of course turned it a different color! I like that you mentioned trying more natural cleaners. Although I find there is some use for bleach and other cleaners, I've started using things like vinegar and baking soda to clean things.

  2. Hi Caitlin,

I am so surprised by the windex score. Especially after looking at some of the scores I was looking up for my products. It makes you wonder that if companies can make products like this that have little to no health and environmental effects, then why aren't all products produced that way? Thank you for your post!
